  •  Painting Catch Up  View Printable Version

    Painting

After a very, very long hiatus, I finally dusted off the models and supplies and got caught up on some painting so I can start playing again. It was pretty sad after seeing just how much I'd left unpainted. The sight of the 8 or so models that had fallen apart, been bent or otherwise damaged in my army transport was pretty sad too.

The repair work didn't take too long, but after getting them all together, I realized I had about 30 unpainted models to deal with. Two weeks later, I feel much better about it.

I still need to clear coat everything I painted, except for the Witch Coven, and base the two units, but my Cryx are almost ready to go again. Unfortunately, I still have five Trollblood Champions and eight Pyg Bushwhackers to paint before I'm really caught up.

Here's what I've got done so far:

The Finished Dire Troll Mauler  View Printable Version

    Trollbloods

Here's the finished Dire Troll Mauler. I'm happy with the paint job, but not quite so happy with my gap filling job I did on it. Next payday, I plan on buying some better sculpting tools. That ought to solve the problem I had this time.

    See more in the gallery.

Do I hate painting units that much?  View Printable Version
     Dated:  Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 10:13 PM CDT

I finished up the Dire Troll Mauler today. I'll have pictures of it tomorrow after the clear coat dries. I don't want to touch it again until it's good and dry. I also finished up the Ogrun Boker, which has not been clear coated, so I have pictures of it uploaded now.

I try to convince myself I painted the bigger models I needed to do first so I could get back into the swing of things. I'm not sure how true that is. It seems much more likely that I'm rationalizing my hatred for paintng units of models. The repitition gets to me. But at least I've got three more models done that I don't have to do later.

Still on the list to be painted:

    • Witch Coven of Garghalast (minus Egregore)
    • Bane Knights (8)
    • Machine Wraith
    • Deathripper x3
    • Nightwretch
    • Defiler
    • Slayer (which also has to be stripped a little more first)
    • Trollkin Champions (5)
    • Pyg Bushwhackers (6)
    • Pyre Troll

I'm probably forgetting a model or two somewhere, but that's at least most of them.

I've been painting again...  View Printable Version

It took a long time to get up the motivation, but I'm finally painting again. I was amazed at how many models I'd acquired in the six months were I wasn't really playing or painting much. With the new campaign going on up at the Limey Dragon Games & Hobbies, I've got some motivation going, so I'm taking advantage of it.

I got quite a bit done yesterday. The two models still aren't quite, done, but they make good work in progress pictures to show I'm actually doing something.

I finally got around to painting the poor bastard yesterday. I like it, but I can't help but feel it's missing something.

And yes, I know I didn't put his silly long scroll on there. But it looks silly just laying it on the base with him.

I Hate Painting Units  View Printable Version

    Painting

I haven't been in the mood to paint lately. I've had a new Warlock for my Trollbloods for over a week and it still sits with only a basecoat on his skin.

On that note, I've been working on a unit of Deliverers (I think) for Jim's Menoth Army this morning. They've been sitting on my desk half painted for awhile.

I really hate painting units. It's dull. At least they're about 80% done now, so I'm taking a short break to update this site, which I haven't done, because I haven't done anything new, except play a few games, in the last week or two.

That reminds me. When I get the motivation, I've got a couple new army lists to add.

I've been working on some more wreck markers. These were really just an excuse to play with sculpting using Green Stuff. I still need to paint the 'jack bits, but they're starting to look pretty good.

The tree could use some highlighting as well. I just haven't felt up to it since I painted it the first time. It took several tries to get it to look as good as it did.

I started painting one of the Deathrippers today. I've been playing around with a new color scheme for them. I think I'm going to like it, but it's hard to tell so far. I plan on doing quite a bit of glazing to achieve the look I want, so this is pretty rough. Oh well. If all else fails, I just have to strip the thing again.

Why didn't someone tell me before?  View Printable Version

PaintingI've been having trouble getting my priming to work the way I want it to. I started off using standard Krylon spray paint, because that's what was available at Limey Dragon Games & Hobbies. I bought a can of Krylon primer and I've been using it on the last dozen or so models. I like the way my paint went on to it better, but I had trouble getting it to cover the way I wanted to.

Every time I used it, my coat would be too thin and come off easily or too thick and have a funny texture. I finally discovered the root of the problem. When they were telling me how to prime the models initially, no one told me that it's supposed to go on as two or more thin coats. I kept trying to get everything on in one coat on each side.

I should get much better results in the future.

With the new parts, I now have Deneghra, a Deathripper and a Defiler that are ready to paint. The other Deathripper just needs a coat of primer now, and I still haven't gotten the Slayer yet. I'll probably have him Tuesday. By then, I hope to have figured out a paint scheme.
